Translated from our book A Beginner’s Guide to Reading Gregorian Chant Notation, using Big Notes as the monks did in early times when scribing single large sheets for the entire schola to sing from on a stand.
How does this work? It cames to us that today’s smaller, printed chant books are hard to read. But by learning the square note patterns from large notes, the mind quickly absorbs the direction of the melodic devices and then is much more able to read them in small page form.
It works.
